Nik5W1H Support

Nik5W1H is a personal memory and information organiser based on the 5W1H approach: What, Where, When, Who, Why and How.

It is designed to help you record and retrieve useful information about belongings, people, documents, procedures and everyday activities.

Getting Started

Create a new memory item and enter a title or description of what you want to remember.

You can add information to any of the 5W1H fields:

What — What is it?
Where — Where is it or where did something happen?
When — When did it happen or when is it relevant?
Who — Who is associated with it?
Why — Why is this information important?
How — How is something done?

You can also add notes and supporting attachments.

Speech-to-Text

Nik5W1H supports speech-to-text to make entering information easier.

Select your preferred speech recognition language from the language control in the app, then tap the microphone control where speech input is available.

Speech recognition availability and accuracy may depend on your device, selected language and Apple’s speech recognition services.

Photos and Camera

You can attach photos to memory items using the camera or your photo library.

Nik5W1H will request access to the camera or photo library only when required for these features.

Documents, PDF and Scanning

Memory items can include documents and PDF files.

Where supported, you can also scan documents and use text recognition to capture information from them.

Location

Nik5W1H can save location information with a memory item when you choose to use the location feature.

Location access requires permission from your device.

Location information associated with an item can be opened in a supported mapping application.

Storage

Nik5W1H supports storage on the local device and, where configured and available, iCloud storage.

Changing the selected storage location does not automatically guarantee that existing data has been transferred to the new location.

We strongly recommend creating a backup before changing storage settings or making significant changes to your data.

Backup and Restore

Nik5W1H provides backup and restore functions to help protect your information.

We recommend making regular backups, particularly before:

changing storage locations;
replacing or resetting a device;
deleting significant amounts of information; or
installing major system updates.

Keep backup files in a safe location.

Importing CoopLilNotes

Nik5W1H can import compatible CoopLilNotes backup files.

Imported information is appended to your existing Nik5W1H information. We recommend creating a Nik5W1H backup before performing an import.

Permissions

Depending on the features you use, Nik5W1H may request permission to access:

Microphone
Speech Recognition
Camera
Photos
Location

You can review or change these permissions in the Settings app on your Apple device.

Troubleshooting

If a feature is not working:

Confirm that the required permission has been granted in your device Settings.
Close and reopen Nik5W1H.
Confirm that sufficient device storage is available.
For iCloud features, confirm that you are signed in to iCloud and that iCloud is available.
If necessary, restart your device and try again.

Before reinstalling or deleting Nik5W1H, make sure you have a current backup of any information you want to keep.

When reporting a problem, it is helpful to include:

your device model;
iOS or iPadOS version;
Nik5W1H version;
a description of what you were doing when the problem occurred; and
any error message displayed.
